Depending on your language level and admission, two routes lead to studying in Germany.

Study preparation visa

Language course in Germany followed by studies

  • For a preparatory German course (at least 20 hours/week) followed by studies.
  • German skills at least at level A2, proven at an ALTE-certified institute (e.g. Goethe-Institut, telc, TestDaF).
  • Conditional admission letter or applicant confirmation, or correspondence with the university.
  • The language course may start no earlier than 2 months after the visa application has been submitted.
  • Proof of financing for the first year: €11,904 – blocked account or formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung).

Student visa

Direct study start at a German university

  • For directly starting a degree programme in Germany.
  • Unconditional admission letter from the university required.
  • Language proof: German with DSH or TestDaF, or English with IELTS, TOEFL or other certificates.
  • Proof of financing for the first year: €11,904 (€992/month) – blocked account or formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung).
  • Application submitted in person at TLScontact.

  • Berlin

    Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany, with a highly international environment. For language learners and students, the city offers a wide range of language schools and higher education institutions as well as a diverse cultural life.

  • Düsseldorf

    Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Rhine and an important business location. The city has an international character and lies in a densely populated region with numerous higher education institutions nearby.

  • Frankfurt am Main

    Frankfurt am Main is an international financial and transport hub with one of Europe's largest airports. The city is strongly international and home to several higher education institutions, including Goethe University.

  • Freiburg

    Freiburg im Breisgau lies in south-west Germany on the edge of the Black Forest, close to the French and Swiss borders. Its long-established university shapes the city's strongly student-oriented life.

  • Heidelberg

    Heidelberg is known for its historic old town and Germany's oldest university. The cityscape and everyday life are strongly shaped by students and international visitors.

  • München

    Munich is the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany's largest cities, with renowned universities and a strong labour market. The city combines an international environment with proximity to the Alps.

  • Münster

    Münster is a university city in Westphalia with a historic old town and a reputation for being particularly bicycle-friendly. The high proportion of students shapes urban life.

  • Nürnberg

    Nuremberg is the second-largest city in Bavaria, with a well-known historic old town. It lies at the centre of a metropolitan region with higher education institutions as well as industrial and technology companies.

Your path to the student visa

  2. Step 2 · approx. 2 weeks

    Exam preparation

    Targeted preparation for a recognised language exam at an ALTE-certified institute.

  3. Step 3 · approx. 2 weeks

    Exam & certificate

    You take the language exam and receive your certificate as proof.

  4. Step 4 · approx. 1–1.5 weeks

    Digital document upload

    Your documents are submitted digitally to the German Embassy and pre-checked.

  5. Step 5 · approx. 2–3 weeks

    TLS appointment

    In-person appointment at TLScontact: you submit biometric data and original documents.

  6. Step 6 · approx. 8–12 weeks

    Processing of the visa application

    The embassy reviews your application – we keep an eye on the status together with you.

  7. Step 7 · approx. 2 weeks

    Departure & arrival

    Collect your visa, plan your trip and arrive in Germany – we support you after arrival as well.

Important notes on the procedure

  • The application must be submitted in person at TLScontact.
  • Submit all documents as originals together with a clearly legible copy.
  • Documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a German translation.
  • The language course may begin no earlier than 2 months after the visa application has been submitted.
  • The list is not exhaustive; there is no guarantee that the visa will be issued.

  1. Application form (VIDEX) including the instructions pursuant to Section 54 of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), completed and signed

  2. Valid passport (valid for at least another 6 months)

  3. Photocopy of page 2 of the passport

  4. 3 biometric passport photos

  5. Letter of motivation (max. 1 page)

  6. Confirmation of registration for a university-preparatory German course (at least 20 hours/week)

    The course level must follow on from the level already achieved; a mere confirmation of participation is generally not accepted as an achieved level; skipping a level is considered a plausibility issue. The course may start no earlier than 2 months after submission of the visa application.

  7. Proof of German language skills at least at level A2

    Accepted are ALTE-certified institutes: ECL, Goethe-Institut, ÖSD, telc gGmbH, TestDaF.

  8. Conditional admission letter OR applicant confirmation / correspondence with the university

  9. Secondary school leaving certificate (Diplôme du baccalauréat)

    Certified by the Tunisian ministries.

  10. If available: higher education certificate with transcript of records

    Certified.

  11. Proof of financing for the first year: EUR 11,904.00

    Blocked account in Germany OR formal obligation letter pursuant to Sections 66–68 AufenthG.

  12. Health insurance coverage

    Private health insurance for the entire visa period (usually 6 months); policies limited to 90 days are NOT suitable.

  8. Secondary school leaving certificate

    Certified by the Tunisian Ministry of Education AND the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  9. If available: higher education certificate

    Certified by the Ministry of Higher Education AND the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  10. Proof of financing for the first year: EUR 11,904.00 (EUR 992.00/month)

    Blocked account OR formal obligation letter.

  11. Health insurance

    Statutory health insurance is only possible from enrolment; before that, private health insurance for 90 days from entry.
